The collagen supplement market is enormous, loud, and full of products making claims that range from well-evidenced to entirely fictional. If you are a woman in perimenopause or menopause trying to work out what is actually worth taking, the noise is not helpful.
So here is the straightforward version: what collagen is, what happens to it during the menopausal transition, what the clinical evidence actually supports, and what to look for on a label. No proprietary blends. No miracle claims. Just the information you need to make a sensible decision.
What collagen is and why menopause changes everything about it
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It forms the structural scaffold of skin, bones, joints, tendons, the gut lining, and blood vessels. Your body makes it continuously. Type II is the primary component of cartilage. It is found in chicken sternum collagen and has a separate evidence base for joint outcomes, specifically osteoarthritis and joint discomfort. It is a different molecule from Types I and III and takes a different supplemental form. If joints are your primary concern, you want Type II, not the same hydrolysed collagen used for skin.
Type III often appears alongside Type I in skin and connective tissue. Bovine collagen provides both, making it broader in scope than marine. For skin specifically, marine collagen has slightly stronger evidence, but the difference in real-world outcomes between marine and bovine is not clearly demonstrated in head-to-head human trials. After hydrolysis, the type distinction matters less than the marketing suggests. Hydrolysed collagen peptides from any source are broken down into common dipeptides, particularly hydroxyproline-proline, that the body uses for collagen synthesis regardless of the original source. The “marine is superior” and “bovine is superior” arguments are both somewhat overstated relative to what the evidence actually shows.

What the clinical evidence actually shows
Skin
This is the most evidenced area for collagen supplementation in women. A systematic review of 26 randomised controlled trials found consistent improvements in skin hydration and elasticity with hydrolysed collagen peptides at 2.5 to 10 grams daily. Most measurable changes appeared at 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. A 2021 RCT in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in postmenopausal women found 5 grams of marine collagen daily for 12 weeks produced significant improvements in skin elasticity and hydration versus placebo. The evidence for skin is not definitive (some studies are small or industry-funded), but it is the most consistent evidence base in the collagen supplement field. For women losing 30% of dermal collagen in five years, the case for supporting collagen synthesis is sound.
Bone
This is the finding most women have not heard about and arguably the most clinically significant for perimenopause specifically. A 12-month placebo-controlled trial by König and colleagues in 2018 enrolled 102 postmenopausal women with low bone mineral density. Women receiving 5 grams per day of specific bioactive collagen peptides showed significantly greater increases in spine and femoral neck bone mineral density compared to placebo. They also had higher levels of the bone formation marker P1NP and lower levels of the bone resorption marker CTX, meaning the collagen appeared to be supporting bone building while reducing bone breakdown simultaneously. This is currently the strongest single human trial in the field and it uses a dose and duration that is entirely practical. Five grams a day for a year is not an extreme intervention.
Joints
Undenatured Type II collagen at 40mg daily has evidence for joint comfort from osteoarthritis and exercise-related joint discomfort trials. This is a very different product from the hydrolysed collagen used for skin and bone, and a very different dose. Do not confuse the two. If joints are your primary concern, look specifically for undenatured Type II, not a higher dose of hydrolysed collagen peptides.
What does not yet have strong evidence
Gut health benefits of collagen are widely marketed and poorly evidenced in humans. Hair and nail growth claims sit between plausible and unproven. Collagen as a complete meal replacement or primary protein source is nutritionally questionable since it lacks essential amino acids. The evidence base for collagen is significantly stronger for skin and bone than for most other claims you will see on product packaging.
What to actually look for on a label
The label tells you almost everything you need to know if you know what you are reading for.
The form should say “hydrolysed collagen peptides” or “collagen hydrolysate.” Generic “collagen protein” with no further specification is a flag. The body absorbs hydrolysed peptides significantly more efficiently than intact collagen protein, and if a product does not specify hydrolysed, it may not be.
The source should be named: bovine, marine, or chicken. No named source is a flag.
The dose should be at or above 5 grams of collagen per serving for skin and bone outcomes. Products delivering 1 to 2 grams in a single serving are below the doses used in the clinical trials showing the results they are likely implying. Impressive-sounding ingredient lists do not compensate for an underdosed core ingredient.
Added vitamin C is worth having since vitamin C is a cofactor in collagen synthesis, but it should not be the primary reason to choose one product over another. A basic vitamin C supplement costs almost nothing, and if a collagen product is heavily priced on the back of its vitamin C content, the pricing is not justified by the science.
Proprietary blends that obscure the actual collagen dose are a flag. If you cannot see how many grams of collagen per serving are in the product, you cannot assess whether the dose is clinically relevant.

In West African culinary traditions, slow-cooked bone and meat broths are foundational in everyday cooking and specifically valued for postpartum women and the elderly. In Latin American and Caribbean cuisines, collagen-rich preparations including beef foot stew, oxtail, slow-cooked pork, and fish head soups are cultural staples whose nutritional depth was understood for generations before the word collagen existed in any language.
Japanese cuisine, with its high consumption of fish, fish skin, and traditional dashi broths, provides consistent dietary collagen alongside the phytoestrogens of soy. Consistency matters more than brand. Eight to twelve weeks of daily use before expecting measurable changes. Collagen synthesis is a slow biological process and dermal remodelling does not happen quickly. Products that promise visible results in two weeks are not being honest about the biology.
