Best Bed Sheets For Night Sweats

By Sophora Editorial  ·  Reviewed June 2026  ·  Last updated June 2026

You wake up at 3am. The sheets are damp. You are burning up. You push the covers back and lie there, waiting for your body to settle, wondering if this is just your life now. If you are going through perimenopause or menopause, perimenopausal night sweats are one of the most disruptive things you will face. And the sheets you are sleeping on are either making them significantly worse or helping you get back to sleep faster.

No sheet can prevent a night sweat. The hormonal mechanism behind them is not something bedding can fix. But the right cooling sheets for night sweats change what happens after each episode, how fast your body temperature drops, how quickly the moisture clears, and whether you lose thirty minutes of sleep or the rest of the night. That difference, repeated every night for months, is enormous.

This guide tells you exactly what works, what to look for, and what is worth buying. No marketing. No filler. Just what the materials actually do.

Why your sheets make such a big difference to night sweats

During a night sweat, your body releases heat and moisture rapidly. What happens next depends almost entirely on what is against your skin. Standard cotton absorbs that moisture and holds it, so you end up lying in a damp, clammy layer that traps heat against your skin and prevents your temperature from dropping. The sweat cannot evaporate. You stay hot and uncomfortable long after the episode itself has passed.

The right sheets do the opposite. They pull moisture away from your skin and allow it to evaporate quickly, which actively helps your body cool down. A peer-reviewed pilot study published by the National Institutes of Health found that people using cooling bed sheets reported a 42 percent reduction in trouble sleeping due to heat, 26 additional minutes of sleep per night on average, and measurable improvements in night sweats, restorative sleep, mood, and next-day alertness. Sleep duration rose from 6.5 to 7 hours.

The three things that matter in sheets for night sweats

  • Moisture-wicking: pulls sweat away from your skin and moves it to the surface to evaporate
  • Breathability: allows air to circulate so heat escapes rather than builds under the covers
  • Thermal regulation: adapts as your temperature swings, cooling when you spike and not leaving you freezing when the sweat passes

Thread count is the wrong thing to look at for night sweats. Thread counts above 400 trap heat. Material and weave are what matters.

Are bamboo sheets good for night sweats? Yes. Here is why.

Bamboo is the material with the strongest performance profile for perimenopausal night sweats, and the evidence backs it. Bamboo viscose fibre absorbs up to 60 percent more moisture than cotton and moves it approximately three times faster. Independent product testing found bamboo fabric to be 17 percent more cooling-efficient and 24 percent better at sweat management than cotton, standard viscose, and Tencel comparators. Beyond performance, bamboo cooling sheets are naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and odour-resistant. They have a soft, silky feel unlike anything cotton produces, and they regulate temperature through the whole night rather than just feeling cool on first contact.

We built our Sophora Bamboo Cooling Sheet Set specifically for this. Not a general wellness product. Not a sheet designed for “hot sleepers” as a category. A sheet designed for the specific pattern of perimenopausal night sweats, the sudden heat spike, the heavy sweat, the need to cool fast and get back to sleep. It is 100 percent bamboo lyocell at the optimal thread count and GSM for breathability, OEKO-TEX certified, and available in king and queen sizes. It is coming soon. When it is ready, you will find it here.

Why a bamboo pillowcase set (and bamboo pillows) matter as much as the sheets

Most women focus on the sheets and overlook the pillowcase and bamboo pillows. That is a mistake. Your head and neck are among the highest heat-releasing parts of your body during a night sweat. The pillow is the surface with the most direct skin contact, and a hot, damp pillowcase keeps your head temperature elevated long after the rest of your body has started to cool. Many women describe flipping the pillow to the cool side as a reflex in the night. With a standard cotton or polyester pillowcase, that cool side lasts minutes. With a bamboo pillowcase, the cooling effect is sustained.

A bamboo pillowcase set paired with bamboo cooling sheets creates a consistent sleep surface that works together. The moisture-wicking and breathability of the bamboo fabric means sweat evaporates across both surfaces at the same rate, reducing the cold, damp clamminess that keeps you awake after an episode. This is why our Sophora Bamboo Pillowcase Set is designed to match the sheet set directly, same material, same GSM, same OEKO-TEX certification. The whole surface works in one direction. How the materials compare: bamboo, linen, Tencel, and cotton

The bedding market makes a lot of claims. Here is what each material actually delivers for someone dealing with night sweats.

Bamboo (viscose or lyocell), top choice

Outstanding moisture-wicking. Naturally temperature-regulating. Silky soft. Hypoallergenic and antibacterial. Available in bamboo sheets king and queen sizes across all main bedding brands. Best at 100 percent bamboo, 250-350 thread count. Bamboo lyocell is the more eco-friendly version; bamboo viscose is excellent and more widely available.

Linen, best for maximum breathability

The most breathable natural fibre. Absorbs up to 20 percent of its weight in moisture before feeling wet, then releases it 40 percent faster than cotton. Slightly textured feel (not silky) but becomes softer with every wash. Highly durable, lasts five to ten years even with frequent washing. Best for women who run very hot or live in warm climates.

Tencel (lyocell), best moisture management for heavy sweaters

Made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus in a closed-loop process. Three times more breathable than cotton and wicks moisture 70 percent better. Engineered to absorb sweat into the centre of the fibre and release it rapidly. Smooth and cool to the touch. The premium technical choice for heavy night sweaters.

Cotton percale, acceptable budget option

Standard cotton absorbs sweat but holds onto it rather than wicking it away. Cotton percale (a specific lightweight weave) performs meaningfully better than regular cotton or sateen weaves. If you prefer cotton, percale at 200 to 400 thread count is the right choice. Sateen, high thread count Egyptian cotton, and flannel are wrong choices for night sweats.

Polyester, microfibre, sateen, flannel, avoid

All of these trap heat and humidity. Synthetic “cooling” coatings wash out quickly. None are appropriate for perimenopausal night sweats regardless of marketing claims.

Do you need a cooling blanket as well as cooling sheets?

If night sweats are severe, yes. Sheets manage the surface closest to your skin, but a heavy duvet on top traps heat around your whole body and intensifies each episode. A lightweight cooling blanket replaces the heavy duvet and lets your body manage its temperature freely during a sweat. The sheets manage the surface. The blanket manages the environment around your body. Together they give the sweat somewhere to go instead of trapping it against you.

Our Sophora Cooling Blanket is built specifically for this combination. Lightweight. Breathable. Designed to work in the same direction as the bamboo sheets rather than undoing their work. Coming soon.

What to look for when buying cooling sheets

Material first, always. Bamboo, linen, or Tencel are the three materials with genuine evidence for managing night sweats. Cotton percale is acceptable. Everything else is a compromise.

Thread count is not a quality signal for cooling sheets. For bamboo, 250 to 350 is the sweet spot. For cotton percale, 200 to 400. Above 400 in any material, the weave becomes too tight to breathe properly. The marketing around 800 or 1,000 thread count “luxury” sheets actively works against you if night sweats are your problem.

Check the GSM (grams per square metre). For cooling sheets, lightweight is what you want. Aim for 90 to 130 GSM. Above 150 GSM and the sheet starts retaining heat.

Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. This confirms the fabric has been independently tested for harmful chemicals. Relevant when you are sleeping against it every night in a sweating state. OEKO-TEX certified bamboo sheets are widely available.

Wash care matters more than most people realise. Wash at 40 degrees Celsius maximum. Avoid fabric softener entirely, it coats the fibres and progressively reduces moisture-wicking over time. Line dry where possible. Bamboo lyocell and linen hold up better to frequent washing than bamboo viscose or cotton.

The complete sleep environment for night sweats

Your sheets handle the surface. The rest of your sleep environment handles everything else. Sleep research consistently points to 16 to 19 degrees Celsius (60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit) as the optimal bedroom temperature for women dealing with perimenopausal night sweats. A bedside fan gives you instant air movement. A glass of cold water on the nightstand means you can cool down quickly without getting up. Layered, lightweight bedding you can remove fast during an episode works better than a single heavy duvet.

The complete night sweat sleep environment

  • Bamboo cooling sheets or linen, 90-130 GSM, 250-350 thread count
  • Bamboo pillowcase set: matches the sheets and keeps your head cool
  • Lightweight cooling blanket instead of a heavy duvet
  • Room at 16-19 degrees Celsius (60-67 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Small fan within reach of the bed
  • Glass of cold water on the nightstand
  • No alcohol or spicy food in the two hours before bed

“The right sheets do not stop a night sweat. They change what happens after it, how fast you cool, how quickly the moisture clears, and whether you lose thirty minutes or the rest of the night.”

Questions you are probably asking

Are bamboo sheets actually good, or is it just marketing?

They are genuinely good for night sweats. The moisture-wicking and breathability of bamboo viscose and bamboo lyocell is supported by independent testing, not just brand claims. The fibre structure does what it says. The caveat: buy 100 percent bamboo, not a blend, and stay in the 250-350 thread count range. Below 250 and durability suffers. Above 350 and breathability drops.

Bamboo sheets king or queen, which size should I buy?

Buy the size that fits your mattress. Both bamboo sheets king and queen bamboo sheets are widely available, including the Sophora range when it launches. If you also want matching bamboo pillows, What matters more than size is pocket depth, make sure the fitted sheet fits your mattress depth, especially if you use a mattress topper. Most quality bamboo sets fit mattresses up to 40cm (16 inches) deep.

Are comfy sheets for night sweats the same as cooling sheets?

Not always. Many sheets marketed as “comfy sheets” prioritise softness over moisture management. For night sweats specifically, the priority is moisture-wicking and breathability, and those properties should be confirmed by the material (bamboo, linen, or Tencel) rather than assumed from a comfort claim. The good news is that the best cooling sheets for night sweats, particularly bamboo, are also some of the softest and most comfortable sheets available. You do not have to choose between comfy and effective.

How often should I wash sheets when I am having night sweats?

Every seven to ten days at 40 degrees Celsius. More frequent washing in hot water degrades moisture-wicking fibres over time. Avoid fabric softener entirely, it coats the fibres and reduces their ability to manage moisture. Line dry where possible. Bamboo lyocell and linen hold up best to repeated washing.

In summary

You now know: Bamboo cooling sheets, linen, and Tencel are the three materials with genuine evidence for managing night sweats. Thread count above 400 traps heat. A bamboo pillowcase set matters as much as the sheets. A cooling blanket replaces the heat-trapping duvet. Together they change the whole sleep environment.

One thing to do: Check what your current sheets are made from. If they are standard cotton sateen, polyester, or above 400 thread count, that is almost certainly contributing to how badly your night sweats are disrupting your sleep.

Hold onto this: Better bedding works from the first night. It is not a cure. But it is the fastest, most accessible change you can make right now, tonight.
